Starting Work in a Government Lab

You’re so excited! You just passed your defense; you got a great postdoctoral position in a government lab and you’re eager to get started on the research. STOP. Your first three months at a government research facility are quite different than going to lab, reading up on your new topic of research, and getting started planning your experiments. With government research, unlike academic institutions, the focus is not only on ongoing research programs, but also worker safety, business objectives, and ethics.
